Direct Access
Many of the patients seen at Orthopedic Physical Therapy Center are referred to us by their family physician, physician assistant, certified nurse practitioner, physiatrist, neurologist, neurosurgeon, dentist, or orthopedic surgeon. However, due to direct access in South Dakota, we see many patients who are self referred or are referred to us by family or friends.
"What does direct access mean?"
Direct access means that physical therapists are able to evaluate and treat a patient without a physician referral. Although most insurance companies do not require a physician referral, some plans, such as Medicare, do require a referral. Therapists at OPTC work closely with physicians to ensure proper care and will refer to a medical doctor when necessary.
